Hailey & Kadie with their new boatCongratulations to our patient, Kadie Brown for being selected for the Junior National Rowing Team!

"In only her second year rowing crew, AWS sophomore Kadie Brown has been selected as one of only 20 high school students in the U.S. to join the Junior National Rowing Team. As a member of the Commencement Bay Rowing Club in Lakewood, WA, Brown participated in the high school level national team trials last February. Regional trials were held across the United States. Brown and approximately 30 other athletes in her region had qualified and were expected to train for an additional three months. Every month, Brown was required to row 2K on an indoor rowing machine and send in her time along with her current height and weight.

'I had never planned on rowing, but my aunt who rowed on the world team got me into it after I had multiple knee reconstruction surgeries due to soccer injuries,' says Brown. 'It was an extremely stressful three months, because I couldn't let up on my training. I practiced in the afternoons six days a week, plus at least one morning each week at 5:00 a.m. before school. On the days when I didn't have morning practice, I ran hill sprints before school to keep up my endurance.'

On May 3, 2011, the national team coach notified Brown that she was one of only 20 girls in the country who had made the Junior Development National Team. 'It was the best feeling of my life,' she says. In June, Brown will fly to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT where she will train for one month with the team and then travel to Indianapolis, IN to compete with international teams."
